AndroidTapp.com Android Game Review:

Features:

Most people would agree that there’s a bit of a shortage of decent games for Android devices and although the situation’s better than it used to be there are still far (far) fewer than for, say… the iPhone. Wouldn’t it be handy then, if you could play games designed for another platform with a massive back catalogue? Well, that’s exactly what Nesoid brings to the party by providing access to pretty much all the games (if you can find them) released for the original Nintendo console, including classics like Zelda, Donkey Kong, and Super Mario Brothers.

Nesoid is an emulator providing the facility to play NES games but none are supplied with it so you’ll need to download them from somewhere. Google for “NES ROMS” and you’ll find plenty of sites offering them up for free. Just be aware though that downloading the ROMs (if you don’t already own the original carts) is a bit dodgy due to copyright issues.

Games are stored on the SD card so don’t take up any internal memory and it’s claimed that 95% will work without problems. You can save the game state mid-play which is a nice touch; and of course, more than you could do with the original console.

Control options are limited to (hard)keyboard and trackball – keyboard being by far the easier option. Note that since there’s no soft-keyboard option Nesoid probably won’t be much use to you unless you’re a G1 owner. Key mappings are customisable and there’s a couple of options for using the trackball too. Other settings include scaling options (original, scale with same aspect ratio or stretch to fit) and the ability to turn “accurate rendering” on or off although it doesn’t seem to make a great deal of difference.

Fun Factor:

Assuming you’re a G1 owner, you don’t mind paying for apps and you understand what you’re buying, Nesoid is well worth a look. It works surprisingly well and gives you practically unlimited gaming possibilities. Don’t expect miracles though, remember these games are 25 years old and NOT very sophisticated but that doesn’t mean they can’t be fun!

Addictive:

Can’t stop playing NES Tennis!

Graphics:

Doesn’t stretch the G1’s capabilities.

Accelerometer, Vibration & Sound:

There is no accelerometer or vibration support. The sound works okay for the most part but it’s worth disabling it in the settings menu if you’re experiencing problems… in case the sound is to blame.

Should you Download Nesoid (NES emulator)? Yes, if you’re a G1 owning classic game lover. Not really, if your phone doesn’t have a keyboard and you prefer the latest game technology.
